How to Start Your Own Successful Custom T-Shirt Business on the Cheap

By M. Anderson

Whether the economy is up or down, custom t-shirts can be one of the easiest methods to making some extra money. While anything started during economic good times will be easier to get of the ground even a downtown in the economy will not stop you from having success.

The easiest way to get started is to first have an idea or theme for your custom work. The reason here is that you want to focus your efforts. You do not want to be chasing after every idea which comes along. First be focused, see some success and then you can branch out into other themes. And one of the best themes to start with is politics, particularly in an election year.

And the wonderful thing about custom t-shirts is you can make each t-shirt to order. There is never a need to carry any pre-printed stock at all since you can manufacture each shirt as needed. This is critical to your cash flow since you won't have a lot of money tied up in stock that may or may not sell. Always keep in mind that your cash in hand in business is truly valuable.

Next in line for success making custom t-shirts are the actual tools of the trade. The least expensive means to get started would be using t-shirt blanks, iron on or heat transfers, an Inkjet printer and a heat press. You may need some graphics software too but don't go overboard buying higher end software to start. Not only can this type of software be expensive, it is often difficult to learn how to use the higher end software. In fact, most PC's today come with simple graphics software which can get you started. Searching for some free software online, like Professor Franklin, is another great way to go.

Heat presses can be expensive too, and the great thing about heat transfers is you can use a regular household iron to apply the transfer. This works well enough for small orders, say batches of 5 - 10, which can easily be completed in an evening. Imagine being able to charge $25 per shirt on custom work(not unlike T-Shirts sold retail) with your cost per shirt being around $5. Ten such shirts would make for a nice little extra income, even with one order per week the extra adds up quickly!

Literally you can purchase T-shirt kits online for under $5. Which include one t-shirt, one piece of transfer paper and the instructions on how to create your very own custom shirt. Sell these for any price you can imagine and the sky is the limit on your business.

Plus, getting setup to expand by using a heat press and quantities of transfer paper with blank t-shirts can be accomplished for about $500. This would include a small 9" x 12" heat press which is ample in size for regular t-shirts.

While the information here is limited and written to provide you some idea of the possibilities in making custom t-shirts, I recommend doing your home work. Check out a few websites, call the people behind the site and find out for yourself what is real or not. You will be amazed what you discover. And many site owners are more than willing to help you get started since everyone benefits.

My final recommendation to you is simply that you have fun in your business!

How to Start a T-Shirt Business in 7 Easy Steps

By Josh Klinger

1. Researching trends: Know what styles are in today. It's important to know what your target market is wearing and what they want. It's true you don't want to copy all the other brands out there, but at the same time you need to understand the styles people are wearing today.

2. Come up with a catchy name: something that will stick in your customers' heads. For example, "Caked" or "Neff" both of these are extremely catchy names that will stick in customers' heads. You want them to see a design or name they like and remember it, so they can Google the name and your website will come up.

3. Create eye-popping designs: Create designs that will stick in customers' heads. Brighter colors and catchy designs will do the trick. Try printing some designs on the back of T-shirts because people look at the backs of shirts longer then at the fronts.

4. Trademark your company name: It's important to register your trademark with the USPTO, so no one else can use your name to design clothing. This is not simple and I would advise at hiring a lawyer to do it properly. Usually this could cost around $400.00-$500.00

5. Get Feedback: You will most likely have to give some shirts away for free, but that's fine, as long as you can get something out of it as well. You need to make sure, whoever you're giving the shirts out to, give you feedback on the shirt comfort, design, style. You want to hear the good and bad, because ultimately the customer is the one who is going to decide whether your T-shirt styles are something consumers are going to want.

6. Create a website: How are customers going to purchase your shirt? It's not likely that your shirts will get into stores right away, so it's important to create a website that has your products for sale on it. You want the website to be created/themed towards your target market. Put yourself in your customers' shoes and see what they would want to see.

7. Networking: Get in contact with people who can help you get your products into stores. Surround yourself with smarter people than you. Go to trade shows and meet other store owners, manufacturers, sales brokers, consultants and buyers. All these people can help you further develop your products and get them into stores.

I am the founder of "Caked"- a bakery themed clothing line. To see my "sweet" finished styles using the steps above, check out http://www.cakedshop.com.

How to Start a T-Shirt Business Using CafePress

By Bryan Pickell

CafePress Overview

CafePress has 6.5 million members who each have their own online storefront - a webpage - where people can buy their stuff.

CafePress is popular because there are no upfront fees or manufacturing costs and basic membership is free.

Each member uploads their own customized design and then selects some, or all, of the stock merchandise for it to be made available on.

There is a very wide range of items that you put your design on, from hats, t-shirts and hoodies, tank tops, kids' clothes, clothing for pets, cards, mugs and more. Browse the site's catalogue for ideas and to preview a design on any product.

While their wholesale prices may be higher than other t-shirt printing companies, they do use American Apparel brand clothing. The key benefit is that there is no minimum product order - you can order fifty t-shirts on behalf of a group, or just one for yourself.

Because there is no minimum product order or membership fee, you can upload and offer for sale as many designs as you like without any financial risk. For a small monthly fee you can go beyond a basic shop and build a large virtual store fully stocked with your creations and branded with your colors and design.

The wholesale prices for each item are set and you determine the retail price, keeping the difference from every sale. All sales are transacted securely on CafePress' servers, and customers pay reasonable shipping costs.

Making Money

As with launching any other business, you need to determine how you will generate sales. Bulk orders offer higher profit margins and can be lucrative, especially if the shirts have been pre-sold to a group or company. Many people have developed profitable businesses selling corporate promotional items made by print-on-demand companies.

While CafePress does have a searchable online catalogue of all products in its database, there is no guarantee that many people will discover your designs this way.

How will you drive traffic to your site? Publicity and word of mouth are the fastest options, provided people know where to find your designs. Viral marketing (which is basically word of mouth online) is great for online sales because if people like what they see, they can immediately place their order with just a few clicks.

If you anticipate the majority of your sales occurring online, you might want to buy a domain name (for about $10) and then redirect it to your store's CafePress webpage. We recommend the redirect because then you can use a short, catchy www address that will be easier to publicize and remember.

If it's appropriate, we recommend letting people know where the shirt came from by incorporating a website address into the graphic. This can help your business gain momentum as more and more people comment on the shirts, some of whom will then visit your online store. Choosing good descriptive keywords for your descriptions will help the major search engines find your webpage.

CafePress also offers help, tips, and even an online community to help you learn how to more effectively design and sell your products.

Starting a T-shirt Business - Cheap Ways to Get Your T-shirt Designs Out To the Public

By Cartess A. Ross

I was on the phone with a guy from Alabama the other day, his name is Tony and we had a long conversation about different ways to get his t-shirt designs out to the general public. At the end of the call, I told him that I wish I recorded the call because it was a great freaking call!

Anyhow, Tony created some great designs, and I won't say what they are because I didn't get his permission, but he wanted to know some inexpensive ways to get it out. Because of the target group he was going after, we discussed one possible venue would be t-shirt shops in the mall... I don't know about your mall, but mine has like 2-3 t-shirt and hat type shops. He felt strongly about his designs and felt most people would buy it if they only saw it.

If you feel you have a great design, approach the shop owners directly. Why? Well, because these shops are in business to make money, and if your design does well... they make money. Now, how do you approach these guys (or ladies)... well, you do what I call "Risk Reversal". In other words, you assume all the risk, while the store owner assumes NONE! In other words, approach the store owner like this...

Sir (or Ma'am), I feel my design is what your store is missing and I'm 100% confident that if the people see these t-shirts, you'll make huge profits. I'm so confident that I'm willing to assume all the risks by letting you keep 12 of my t-shirts with no upfront monies. If they don't sell, you owe me nothing... If they sell, then you and I both win. Let me leave this here and when they sell out, call the number on my business card and I'll bring you some more.. Fair enough??? (don't say anything until they respond).

Why do I teach risk reversal? It's because it works. If you're not willing to assume any risk whatsoever, then why should the business pay you upfront money for your t-shirts and take the risk of possibly not selling a single tee?

If your design is that great, then assume the risk... they'll look at you quite differently. Keep in mind, these people are approached everyday about some type of opportunity, and it's not often that someone will come around with an "risk reversal" proposition. If the store owner makes money... then you do too!

Depending on the type of t-shirs you're selling, try a gas station. They make very little profit on gas sales, and that's why you see them selling everything from watches, to fake teeth, dvds, and more... They're trying to generate revenue. Pass the same offer to them too... they're business owners, they're out to make money just like you are.

You might get lucky because many own several gas stations.

Custom Printed Polo Shirts - Business Uniforms Made Easy

By Amin Ramjee

When you think of uniforms you probably think of private or higher-level schooling. However, business uniforms can be used as a great way to build morale throughout your company as well as a way to bring everyone together. Using custom printed polo shirts, your company can provide business uniforms for every employee, both men and women. Polo shirts can be custom printed and the options that come along with them are endless. Custom printed dress shirts can be bought in bulk in a variety of colors, sizes, and designs. Since the custom printed polo shirts will be used for business purposes, you'll want to keep them professional, classy, and representative of your company.

As business uniforms, the polo shirts your company orders should be bought in a professional color. Stray away from flashy colors and instead choose neutrals such as blacks, blues, or grays. If your company wants to make the custom printed polo shirts eye-catching, a brighter color can be used on the design that is added to the shirt. The custom printed dress shirts should not only be of a professional color, they should also somehow reflect your company. To do this, the company's logo or initials can be monogrammed onto the shirt. The monogram should be small and subtle but it should be noticeable.

In order to design and order custom printed dress shirts, your company will first want to find a company that offers high quality shirts at an affordable price. Be sure that the vendor you choose offers monogram services so that your company's logo and/or name can be stitched on each shirt. Once you have a company selected, you then want to ensure that you have a sound budget to pay for a shirt for each employee. Somehow your company will need to survey your workforce in order to determine the number of different size polo shirts that have to be ordered.

With all of the technical details in hand, your business can then place an order for the custom printed polo shirts. Once the dress shirts are ordered, designed, and delivered, they can then be handed out to your workforce. Instead of handing them out one by one, take the time to set-up a morale building activity where a majority if not all of your workforce is present. The printed polo shirts can then be given to each employee as business uniforms. You can ask employees to wear them to certain meetings or venues. Not only will this bring your workers together, it will also show to other businesses and customers that your company is tight-knit and values working together.

A company will find that by providing custom printed shirts to their workforce, employees will become much closer and willing to work with each other. With a common bind between all of the employees, they will find it a lot easier to bond and work together successfully.

If your company needs a morale boost or if you want to show your employees that you are appreciative and thankful for their work, don't hesitate to design and purchase custom printed polo shirts.

Drop Shipping T-Shirts - 4 Benefits of Drop Shipping to Your Online T-Shirt Business

By Lila J. Fowloer

Selling T-shirts online, whether customized or plain designs, requires an effective way to do inventory, test waters, save costs and list conveniently. These requirements may appear difficult to achieve at first but in the online market today, one strategy answers all the requirements. This is called drop shipping. With this process, you are bereft of time consuming processes like inventory, packing and delivery.

Here is a list of the four benefits that drop shipping provides to your Online T-Shirt business.

1. Volume Orders are Not Required

Drop shippers do not require large orders for you to start transactions. You can order from as small as one piece to as large as 3 dozens. This allows you to control your business and try out the market for trends. Moreover, It also cushions from large volume purchases that may be counterproductive to you.

2. It Eliminates Inventory Problems

Drop shipping eliminates your participation in inventory because the drop shipper does the inventory. This is beneficial mostly to beginners who are not even used to inventory processes or have not even experienced doing inventory. Moreover, you will have extra time to focus on other aspects of your business like marketing.

3. It Saves a Lot of Time

Drop shippers are called such because they accept orders and the same time pack and ship. This saves a lot of time for you. To start with, packing and shipping adds to the cost because of the logistics and manpower needed. Drop Shippers have both the manpower and logistics which does not add to the price but instead lessens it. This enables you to sell products at low rates but still earn a lot.

The 10 Mistakes to Avoid When Launching an Online T-Shirt Business

By Anastasia Kotis

Here are my Top 10 Tips on mistakes to avoid when launching your Online T-shirt Business.

1.Understanding your target market. Often people think they can be everything to everyone however knowing every detail about YOUR specific target market is one of the keys to success. From their age, gender, interests, friendship circles, what they read, what websites and forums they look at, what clubs they attend etc. This will come in handy when you're starting to sell your t-shirts and for target marketing.

2. Set realistic goals about what you want to achieve and the money you would like to make. T-shirt success does not usually happen overnight but rather over a few years. Be realistic with what you can achieve. For example; one goal may be print 50 t-shirts by a certain date. Another goal maybe to sell at least 25 t-shirts to stores by a certain date. Set goals by month so you keep on track and stay motivated.

3.Know when to hold and know when to fold. You have to own your mistakes. It's important that you recognize if a t-shirt is not selling, then try to sell in a different avenue such as eBay or Etsy and move on. It's not worth pushing something that's not working. Every retailer has best sellers and worst sellers and when they don't perform, they are marked down and new product is ranged.

4. Knowing how much money you should invest. In my experience, the best advice is work out an estimate of how much you think it will cost initially to start your business and then double it, as this is probably more realistic. People forget about the smaller things such as postage, shipping costs, petrol, website hosting etc. These little things add up.

5.Test your product before you start to heavily invest. This is an important one and given the current Internet opportunities that are out there, it's easily achievable. If you can make some customized t-shirts from an online website then you can see if people are liking what you are doing. Get your product in photos, organize competitions, give samples to friends to wear and use social websites to show off your t-shirt designs. There are many things you can try, to see if your style works and people like it.

6.Take your time when making important decisions. We are human and we can be impulsive and make quick decisions that may not be the right ones for us. Business is quite tough these days, people will want to rush you and will say anything to try to get you to commit so they have an order. Take your time and weigh up the pros and cons and be informed. Do your research and then make the decision - it will end up saving you time and money!

7.Some opportunities are sometimes not worth it. When you are starting out, you will come across people who will try to challenge your pricing, product and brand. For example, an online retailer may want your product but will only order it, if it's $10 less than your current wholesale cost. If you are making little or no margin on a job, it is OK to say no. In my experience, be willing in some cases to achieve a lower margin, if it means you will get more business from it. Sometimes it's a marketing exercise that is well worth the cost cutting.

8.It's OK to start small. I know myself that as soon as I get a great idea in my head you think 'that's it!' I then start going crazy and spending loads of money. You may buy a machine or other equipment that is quite expensive. Take your time, test different processes and then decide which way you want to go.

It's really important that you do some samples and see the results first before investing a lot of money into equipment and other things that may not be want you wanted after all.

9.Do your homework. If you're thinking of investing in a printing machine, then look at all the costs associated with this process. It's usually not that clear cut and you will find that there will be inks or paper for example, which cost a lot of money and you had not accounted for it.

10.You will be your own Boss! As much as this is super fantastic and you can't wait to be the boss, there are also average tasks as well. You are the only person that can answer to customer complaints and any issues that come up when running the business. It would be great to become part of a network or forum for weekly support. As a single person boss, you also have to start to know everything about anything; from taxes to sales, marketing to design, from dealing with stores and selling online. You have to be able to master and wear many hats that in my opinion can be quite challenging but also exciting.

Good Luck! http://www.tshirtdesignprofits.com

Do You Want to Start Your Very Own Custom T-Shirts Business? Read This!

By Seomul Evans

The economy works in a cyclical pattern and while there are times when its sky rocketing and people are lulled into a false euphoria where they believe that things are always going to be great; every few years, their hopes and dreams are dashed when the economy starts moving downwards. However, one way to combat the movement of the economic cycle is to get yourself a second source of income; this way even if you lose your job or if your business does not make the kind of profit that it once used to, you have something to fall back on and that can be a very consoling thought. If you are looking for a business opportunity that requires minimal investment and yet it can prove to be lucrative regardless of the economic movements; then you don't have to look beyond a custom t-shirts venture.

People buy custom t-shirts regardless of the economic health of the country; after all they do need to wear clothes and what better way than to dress themselves in affordable yet creative and dandy looking garments.

To begin with, you need to start by working on an idea for your custom t-shirts; you need to have a very clear plan ready. For instance, you will need to decide whether you are going to use your own designs or if you will also take orders where the customer makes the design for you or will you offer preset designs that can be chosen from. The best part about a custom t-shirts business is that you don't have to invest in any equipment; there are a lot of sites online who will do all the work fort you and deliver the product to your doorstep; all you will need to do is upload your requirements in terms of the t-shirt color, pattern and the design that will go on it.

Start with something simple, it would not make a lot of sense to block investment at the initial stages; a good time to start would be in summer when people usually order beach wear t-shirts or better yet in an election year when a lot of people are buying t-shirts to proclaim their political inclinations and affiliations. The wonderful thing about this business is that most of these custom t-shirts are made to order eliminating the need to maintain pre printed stock which may or many get sold. This factor will be critical to the success of your business because it directly impacts the cash flow, the more liquidity you have, the better will be your chances of earning a profit in time.

If you would rather set up your own assembly, go for the cheaper technology such as iron or heat transfers, an inkjet printer and a heat transfer iron along with some t-shirt blanks. You may need some graphical design software programs but do not buy the high end stuff just yet. Now only is the high end software are expensive but also it will take you days to master its operations. As a matter of fact, why spend at all? You can easily design custom t-shirts with the graphical software that comes with most computers these days. Alternatively, you could start with some freeware like the Professor Franklin software.

A heat ores will be another expensive acquisition which you may not need in the initial stages because a regular household iron could also work equally well; particularly with small orders of five to ten pieces. If you incorporate all these tips, the cost per piece of a custom t-shirts should not exceed $5 but you can easily sell the piece of $25 making a whooping profit of 400%. Selling ten such t-shirts would mean that you have made a neat little monthly income and as you go along there is nothing stopping you from growing once you have a few regular customers, you can get the high end equipment and software. It is imperative to maintain a presence online for a custom t-shirts business because a lot of these products are ordered online use social networking sites to your advantage by letting people know about your products. Expansion with the purchase of a heat press and high quality transfer paper should not take you more than $500 to accomplish

Factors People Need To Succeed In Their Own Online Custom T-Shirt Business

By John K Vincent

Creating and selling t-shirts is becoming and expanding business. It continues to grow by leaps and bounds. In addition to the brick and mortar businesses, online shops have already made their move. There are many entrepreneurs that are making their mark and running away with it. There are different designs to match different styles.

Since this business doesn't require a lot of money upfront, it's been easy for many people to start their own online custom t-shirt business. Initially, money will need to be spent, but not as much as people might think. Within a matter of six months to about a year, profits should roll in if the business is done right.

Since more people now have heard about how money can be made with this online business, they've jumped on the bandwagon. This, however, creates more competition for the rest of them who have already started. Of course, competition can be a good thing. Then again, it can not be so good, depending on how it's presented.

In order to be better than the competition, just having t-shirts and a design won't do. There must be more to it than that. Thinking that lots of money will automatically be made because of nice looking designs won't fly either. There must be more to it than that. There must be a lot of effort put into this business or else time and money will be wasted.

Think about what kind of goals to set for the business. Some of them can be small detailed step-by-step kind of deals. In fact, they can be some of the best goals because it doesn't require a lot at one time. The goals should provide a directive that can take you from one level of your business to the next.

What is selling for custom apparel is another thing. Doing an online search can help determine what items are selling. See what other things are selling online besides custom t-shirts. There may be a future possibility to sell custom sweatshirts, custom two tone shirts, custom tank tops, and the list goes on and on.

Once it's been decided what to sell, then it's time to get things in order with a few bulk apparel orders and the designs. The designs should be something that the public will enjoy. Once again, an online search can show what kind of designs are selling in the marketplace for custom t-shirts and related apparel.

Now, it's time to put the pedal to the metal and get to work. As this online business moves forward, the interest and the passion have to be there. These qualities will show in the work that's being done. If the custom t-shirt business is successful, profits will continue to come in. Doing this will have to be an ongoing cycle if the desire to make money is there.

During the course of this online business, adjustments will have to be made. Keeping up with the industry is very important for survival because things to change from time to time. Practical Advice on Starting You Own Personalized Shirts Business

By Rihanio Amine

Personalized shirts are a commodity which people will never tire of. There are many reasons why people buy personalized t-shirts, such as giving them away as gifts, using them as advertising for their company, promoting team spirit, or just for personal use. So, you may probably never run out of a market for a personalized shirt. However, competition can be tough, so take these practical recommendations in mind if you do plan to start your own personalized t-shirt business.

Have a winning concept - Before you embark on the journey of custom t-shirt making, think of your concept. Right now, there are a lot of custom t-shirts being sold out there, so you would better have something that nobody else is offering. Having something unique to your shop will make you stand out, and keep customers coming.

Establish your market - Once you have your concept planned out, it will be easy to establish your market. This can be either the youth, couples, pregnant women, movie goers, or any group of people. Keep this market in mind as you go along with your business, and make sure you deliver what your market wants.

Find the cheapest prices without sacrificing quality - Opening a business means that you have to scout for raw materials and get them at the lowest prices. For a personalized shirt business, you would need to look for cheap but quality shirts, and a printing place that can provide the cheapest rates. Bargain for the lowest prices, but never settle for less. Always keep your quality in mind but for low rates. These are the two essential criteria that keep customers satisfied.

Price realistically - Custom personalized t-shirts are everywhere. So you have to price your shirts competitively. For starters, it will be difficult to price cheap. However, the goal is to price realistically. Think about your market and what they can afford. Once you've found your raw materials, calculate how much your production cost is and how much you plan to sell your shirt. It's OK if the earning isn't so much yet. Remember, it's not how much you earn per shirt, rather, it's how much you earn per batch of shirts you sell. Sometimes cheaper prices mean more customers while higher prices mean fewer customers. Think about that.

Market Market Market - Once you open your store and realize that orders are barely coming in, don't be discouraged! When you know your product is good, it only means that people don't know about you yet. So market! Market! Market! Tell the world about your business, and you'll be surprised how sales can go up.

Keep these practical recommendations in mind as you start out in your business. Always have a goal, and make sure you reach it for the growth of your business. And then, good luck.

10 Things That Your Business Plan Should Have For Your Online Custom T-Shirt Business

By John K Vincent

If you're looking to start your own online t-shirt business, it's always good to have a business plan, whether you're looking to get a small loan or not. Having a business plan will put you in the right direction to go with your online business. Here are ten things that are critical in order for you to succeed in doing that:

1. Company's mission statement - What is the purpose of your company? Why should people buy your custom t-shirts? How can your custom t-shirts help others?

2. Summary - This part of the business plan discusses what your company is about. It also talks about what kind of products you will be marketing and selling. It doesn't have to be a lengthy summary, just something that discusses the direction your online business plans to go.

3. Market Studies - Explain ways that you're going to check out your competition. You have to have an idea of what they're doing so that you can stay on top of things. For instance, you don't want to put your website up and be a duplicate. The more you find out about your market, the more different you can be with your custom made t-shirts.

4. Products and Services - In addition to the t-shirts, what kind of designs or applications will you offer your customers? Are there some that will be banned? Will you custom t-shirts be based around Christianity only? How much extra will you charge for special lettering per t-shirt?

5. How to price - What price range are you looking at? You may want to check out some other online retailers that make custom t-shirts and see what their prices are. Whatever price you decide, it can't be too low and it can't be too high. You have to account for expenses such as shipping, taxes, accessories, etc.

6. Marketing and sales - If you're starting from scratch, there are different ways that you can promote your online custom t-shirt business. You'll have to determine what kind of advantage you have over your competitors. Develop a strategy as to how you're going to get through the market. What kind of methods will you use to get customers to come to your site. You don't want them to just come and look, you also want them to buy. You can also use methods such as article marketing, pay per click to advertise your business.

7. Method of operation - You will need to know about how many employees you will have. If it's just you starting out, then that's fine. You may have to do the hard labor for a while until the profits roll in. Know who your suppliers are going to be and your expenses related to that.

8. Organizational chart - Provide the names of the owners, CEO, President, etc., and other officers as needed.

9. Financial projections - Write down expected cash flow for each month. You must include a monthly budget so that you will know how much you can spend. Also, include a profit and loss section. Compare this with your marketing strategies to see which ads failed and which did well.

10. Appendix - This is for anything that you've used to assist with your plan. This can include research or market studies on similar items.

Your business plan is a guide to help you move forward in your online custom t-shirt business. Planning ahead is key to getting your online business off the ground and running.

How To Create A Business Plan For Your Online T-Shirt Business

By John K Vincent

More people are now turning to the internet to create their custom t-shirt businesses. People are starting to realize what they marketed and sold in brick and mortar businesses, can be done via the internet as well.

In addition to that, having a custom t-shirt business on the internet is more cost-effective and easier to do. However, you still have to do your homework when it comes to setting up one, even if it is online.

You still have to include planning and market research for your custom t-shirts. It does not matter if it's a short plan or a lengthy plan. Having a plan is better that not having one at all. You need to know which direction you will be taking your business.

With your internet custom t-shirt business, you must determine how much you will charge for your custom made t-shirts. You'll have to do some comparison pricing on other custom t-shirt websites to see how theirs are priced. That doesn't mean you have to price yours the same.

There are other things you have to consider, such as, are you in the same market as they are with your custom t-shirts? They might be doing something different. There may be strong demand and people are willing to pay those prices.

It may be custom made t-shirts that are unique and can't be found anywhere else but that online custom t-shirt retailer. Unique clothing also attracts a strong demand from customers.

Conduct surveys and look through trade publications to see what the market wants right now. It may not be the right time for the custom t-shirt that you want to sell. Just because you have an idea it doesn't always mean it's going to fly.

As you refine your business plan, you must continue to do some research on your competitors. Who are they? What kind of designs to they have? What can I do to make my custom t-shirts stand out? What kind of marketing strategies are they using?

Those are the questions you should try to answer for yourself. Using the internet, use the search engines to do your research on different custom t-shirt websites. You may want to do family reunion t-shirts.

Then you would type in family reunion t-shirts and see what the results are. How many other websites do you see that are into this line of custom t-shirts, a few hundred, a few thousand? Find out what kind of internet traffic they're getting.

After looking at the results, you feel that you have a shot, then you'll have to find some way to make your custom t-shirt business unique. The key word here is unique. If you don't try to do something on a different style than your competitors, you'll probably lose out and lose your business too.

You will also determine how much inventory you will start off with. You don't need to have an overload that will just sit in your bedroom somewhere. Start off with a certain amount, see how sales go and take it from there. If you're having brisk sales, then you can probably add an extra batch to your order of t-shirts.

One important thing to remember: just because your sales are good, does not give you the license to spend everything. Some of that money will have to be reinvested in purchasing more t-shirts and other accessories needed for the business. So, you may want to wait a while before you purchase your first real designer bag or coat.

How to Brand Your T-Shirt Business

By Jessica N King

These days, people are starting t-shirt and clothing businesses to gain profits. However, to be successful in this business, you first need to create brand identity for your clothing line. Building a brand identity is one of the most important and inevitable aspects of any business. Only because of this brand identity, people can determine your brand from various other brands present in the market. A brand identity can be achieved through various things such as images, philosophy and many such things.

Following tips will guide you to achieve a good brand identity:

1. Firstly, for establishing a good brand identity, you need to believe in your brand. As if you do not believe and have faith in your own brand, then you cannot expect other people to believe in it.

2. Next, promote your brand well to customers so that customers come to know what makes your brand different and unique from all other brands which are available in the market.

3. If you are starting a t-shirt business in partnership with someone, then make your partners understand that they believe in the brand. Build your brand as a team, as it will help you to achieve success faster.

4. It takes a long time for a brand identity to really have a good impression on the customer. So, make the brand visible to your potential customers all the time.

5. Apart from this, have a strong and well-defined logo that signifies your brand. Ensure to design the logo in such a manner that it attracts customers' attraction at first glance.

6. In addition, regularly review customer experiences about your products. This will help to you make any corrections or modifications in your existing business strategies to provide better customer service.

7. Keep blog on the homepage of your website and keep updating it regularly. With this, customers will get to know about your new and innovative clothing and apparel.

Staring Your Own Shirt Business

By Natasha Rodgriguez Ingman

So, you have some shirts ideas on designs for cool tees. Maybe you have some hilariously clever lines to make funny shirts with. If you've ever said to yourself "that'd make a great shirt" then it might be a good idea to go do something about it. The good news is that it isn't very hard to start your own shirt business if you know what to keep in mind and what you'll need.

The online t-shirt business has exploded as of late with companies like Threadless, Busted Tees, and Design by Humans achieving tremendous success with crowdsourced designs. On top of that are the thousands of other sites also selling t-shirts with creative designs, but don't let that discourage you from starting your own. Just because you can't have the whole pie doesn't mean you can't have a piece of it, and fortunately a piece is all you really need.

The first and most important thing to have when starting your own t-shirt business, or any business for that matter, is passion. This isn't exactly a necessity for success, but being passionate about design can help you get through the rougher spots of running a business.

The next thing to keep in mind is that you can't approach this with a "get-rich-quick" attitude. If you think that the business is just about slapping a design onto a shirt and having it sell out, then this isn't the right business for you. This is more about getting your ideas out there and less about making the big bucks.

Then, you'll have to know that you have a market to cater to. Find out if there are people who are looking for what you have to offer. In this case know if you know people who would be interested in your designs. Try going beyond your family and friends for information. This is a great opportunity to make business connections with people who'd be interested in helping you out. Just remember to be wary of people who might look to take advantage of your ambitions.

Next, you'll need to have a theme to your designs. This isn't so to restrict your creativity but give people a way to put your ideas in context. This will fall into what your designs are and also how you market your product. Knowing who your target market is will also help creating your brand identity.

How to Start a T-Shirt Business Effectively

By Fabian Mora

These are not in any particular order of importance but they are 3 things you must know before, or right after you start. With a little research at the beginning you'll have a huge advantage on 80% of the people starting their t-shirt business.

1) Find your niche, or I like to say who your passion speaks to. With this you'll know if there's a market for your shirt and how viable it is. If you have no idea how, here are 3 steps how you can do that.

A) Create a Facebook fan page and invite people see what they say listen to their feedback.
B) Ask yourself, who would wear the shirts, why and where can I find them?
C) Search the web to see if you find similar products targeted to the same audience, if you do that's good it means there's a market and study that brand. Look at where they're advertising, call and ask for a media kit.

2) Find a good quality, inexpensive printer that has experience. Don't settle with the once that make uniforms for little league and only use illustrator with 4 color spot process. Let me give you 3 simple ways to find them.

A) Find a company whose quality of printing you like and simply call them and ask, you'll be surprise how willing they are to help.
B) Use t-shirtforums.com there you can find thousands of them. Do research on them and eliminate the once that don't pass your criteria.
C) Let me give you a tip, if you're paying more than 6.50$ (dollars) per shirt your paying too much. And I'm talking about American Apparel shirts, 10 color prints on front and back, bagged and tagged.

3) Build your website to sell and to attract your target audience. Remember youre selling a product not an idea or a vision, no matter how cool your brand is, you have to make the navigation easy and effortless. Don't get caught in the hype of the brand, make it attractive but not to the point where your sacrificing a good shopping experience for a cool extra graphic. Less is more when it comes to design, focus on the shopping experience and the potential costumer. Let me give you 3 examples.

A) Make sure people can buy your shirts from any platform. Be it an iPad, iPhone, laptop, Droid..... anything. Don't use fancy flash (moving parts on the site) because a lot of phones and devices won't read them.
B) Get a reliable shopping cart that has good customer service and accepts all different types of payment methods. Keep track of inventory don't sell something you don't have, make sure your shopping cart has that option.
C) Brand your website keep the continuity throughout all your social media platforms. Make sure you potential costumer know where he/she are the entire time throughout the entire process. In other words try to make all your pages look similar (YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, Blogger, Blog) keep the continuity of the design where possible, definitely within your website.

This will not make you a successful company or promise you growth nor will it give you hope of a bright future, but it will save you time if you follow these steps. Well now you know how to start a t-shirt business the correct way, that will give you the advantage over many competitors. Create something no one has seen and be so good at it that you can't be ignored, then you'll succeed.

Wholesale T-Shirts - Why Sell Urban T-Shirts For Your Wholesale T-Shirt Business?

By Lila J. Fowloer

In the T-Shirt business the most important indicator of new trends are what young people wear. It is important to know that any design in any product is in some way a bridge to the inner youth of the artist. It is therefore logical to consider that even in the T-shirt industry art is the most important component of marketing. You will have to sell what is considered as an art masterpiece.

If the latest trend now are designs that expose the wacky and crazy side of people such as quotes and funny situations, expect that the next trend will be the urban tee. Before I dwell on it further, let me explain why it is called as such. Urban tees are those that are worn by people in the street particularly in New York. These are worn by young people who like the hip-hop genre. Urban tees are actually the silent exclamations of the youth in New York. The designs are graphic and usually show the hidden emotions go of the person wearing it.

The question then is why should you be ready to sell it once it hits the consciousness of T-Shirt enthusiasts. Here are the reasons.

1. It is the New Trend

I mentioned that in this industry it is the fashion trend that will make or break you. This is the single most important reason why urban tees should be your next target. They are what the young people are starting to wear. Hence, it is just a matter of time that other people will start to knock inside their inner youth and demand for urban tees.

2. The Range of Customers is Big

People who will use this tees will probably range form age 13 to 35. Now that is a huge age demographic that you will cater to. The best thing about this demographic is that the population of most cities in the world is considered young and falls within this age range. Now that is one big population to cater to and make money out of.

3. Everyone wants Distinctiveness

Urban tees are the expressions of emotions of the people who wear it. Now for a huge population range you cannot possibly print and design for each one. What you can do is have designs that are general in theme but are unique to an individual. Say for example a design that says Love but with a black rose in it. For some people it has no meaning but for some it has. For such a huge population to cater to hitting even half of it is profitable.

4. Pricing depends on the Design and not the Brand

You will be able to sell quality plain t-shirts that are cheap at a higher price because of the design. Yes, when you go to urban tees chances are you can give a higher price tag for the more elaborate designs than the simple ones. The best thing about this is that people will not complain about the price because the shirts themselves are work of art and any product that is borne out of an artist is considered valuable.

These are just some reasons why Urban tees are the next frontier in t-shirts. Still, it is your call if you want to venture in selling Urban tees in your Wholesale T-shirt business.

How to Start Your Own Personalized T-Shirt Business

By Ruth S. Lanham

Looking for a new way to earn some money? If you are into arts and crafts and you are actually pretty creative then why not start your own personalized t shirts business? You don't need to go all out in terms of capital as you are only starting, just try it out first to see if it will fare well. Now are you ready to get started? Here are some few tips:

Given that t-shirts will never ever go out of style, those who are interested in putting up a clothing line or who are looking for a great gift idea can never go wrong with t-shirts. You can buy plain t-shirts by the bulk for cheap - just be very discerning in terms of the quality though as you wouldn't want your customers or whoever you'll give your customized t-shirts to get turned off because of the poor quality of the actual t shirt. While scouting for plain t-shirts always make sure that the fit and the actual material used will prove to have a flattering fit on whoever's going to wear it. Plain t-shirts are a much better choice as these can be easily customized to suit your style and liking.

Start creating designs for your personalized t shirts by first sketching drafts on your drawing book, while you should experiment with the actual t-shirt, do remember that you are still starting out and you need not be wasteful with the only materials that you have. Sketch out everything first and then carefully lay out the pattern to the actual shirt. There are various ways that you can start customizing your t-shirts may it be through t shirt prints, silkscreen, embellishments, embroidery and even fabric paint. Just be creative as the possibilities are endless.

Now how to spread the word about your business? After you have designed a couple of t-shirts take good pictures of it and post it in a social networking website if you still don't have your own online store yet. Social networking websites are a great tool for your merchandise to be seen by a lot of people in an instant. You can also mention there that you also accept customization services as long as the buyer is able to give you an idea of what they really want to have done on the shirt.

Other than being a great business idea, personalized t shirts are also a very thoughtful gift to give especially this coming holiday season. Now you need not worry about ending up with just generic gifts for your friends and loved ones, just create a special design for each of your loved ones like create a pop art print of their favorite celebrity or embellished it the way you'd think they like it to be. Apart from being a special gift, it's also not an expensive one to give as long as you know where to shop for the right materials that will transform those plain t-shirts of your into lovely pieces of art.

How To Start A T Shirt Business At Home

By Kurt McAninch

Starting a new business is both exciting and terrifying at the same time. You have the opportunity to finally run things your way. You can work as long and as hard as you want and reap all the rewards that come from that hard work and commitment. Along with the reward though comes the responsibility of all aspects of your new business. You take out the trash and write the checks and everything in between. The t-shirt design industry is exploding right now with amazing designs and talented newcomers that will shape the industry for the next several years. I have been in this industry awhile now and have seen shops open and close, seen online sites explode and implode, and watched as others tinkered with their own online shops through print on demand companies.

There is amazing opportunity right now to get involved in this highly creative and competitive field. One design, like the smiley face, can literally make you a brand name overnight and propel your company to the heights you could only dream of before. Imagine checking your website and seeing 500 orders for that one killer design and your heart races with excitement and the dollar signs fill your eyes. Wait a minute, though! You now have 500 t-shirts to print, process, and ship. It's like a dream and a nightmare all rolled in to one roller coaster of emotion. It's what you wanted, but all that work is going to be time-consuming and you still have to design the next great shirt. It's a delicate balancing act that can make you feel like you are literally walking a tight rope, but it's so worth it in the long run.

So what exactly do you need to get started at home with your new business. You can apply these same principles to a store front if you are going that route, but for the sake of this article I'm assuming you want to start small. Obviously you need a space to work. You are going to need a computer with a software program to create your designs, such as Adobe Illustrator or the free program Gimp. You will need a supply of blank shirts which you can get for around $1 to $1.25 per shirt depending upon the bulk you purchase in.

There are three main methods for printing your designs:

1. Silk Screen Printing - which is a method of burning an image with light on to a nylon screen and then applying dye ink to the shirt through the screen to arrive at your desired image. For many years this was considered the only professional way to create shirts. The start-up cost for this is in the neighborhood of $1200.

2. Heat Press with transfers - A heat press is exactly what the name implies, it is a machine with two Teflon plates that press together over a shirt to transfer an inked image from a special transfer paper, thereby leaving that image on the shirt. This is the most affordable method starting as low as a $600 investment.

3. Direct To Garment (DTG) - This is a relatively new entrance in to the t-shirt design business and is simply a printer that puts your image directly to the garment instead of going through a transfer paper. Cafe Press uses DTG printers for their shirts and the quality is great. This is the least affordable option, however, with some printers being around $25,000. You could possibly get going for under $10,000, but that's still a large investment to earn back.

Have a look at some more comparisons between these methods.

Any of these methods will give you great looking t shirts. The one I would personally recommend starting out obviously is the least expensive option with the heat press and transfer paper. There are many companies out there who have pre-designed transfers you could press on to shirts, or have them custom print transfer paper with your designs on them. Another cool cost saver is the ability to get blank transfer paper and print them with your home printer! I wouldn't recommend these for sale, but they would be great to see if your design was exactly as you wanted it before you put in a large custom order. Not only will you have to decide which method to use for your business but there is also the proper way to go about starting your business. I found a great road map to success that you should check out if you are serious about saving time and money in starting your new venture. Happy Designing!

How To Start A T-Shirt Business

By Heath Sanchez

Many entrepreneurs have discovered the opportunities that abound within the T-Shirt Industry, and therefore the market is becoming increasingly saturated. These days, in order to differentiate yourself from the masses, it has become extremely important to find out what will make your t-shirt business unique. Before you even think about starting on production, take a look at the list below and think very seriously about each of these points. If you are aware of these things before you start your plans, you will already have a head start and a competitive edge over the sea of t-shirt businesses within the market today.

1) WILL YOUR DESIGNS EVEN SELL?

So you've thought up a great design and you're busting to get it onto some t-shirts and to start bringing in the cash? But how do you know if people are going to be as excited about your designs as you are? It's easy to get caught up in your own little world, thinking that your tee shirts are going to sell like hot cakes. This may be true, but it's extremely important to know for sure before you start spending your hard earned dollars on production.

One of the methods I suggest to aspiring t-shirt entrepreneurs is to do a little bit of market research. There are plenty of websites that accept designs and allow users to comment and vote on their favorites. By visiting such sites, you are able to see which designs are the most popular and can get a very good idea of whether your own designs will have appeal or not. Another method is to visit sites that sell t-shirts and find out which are the best sellers. Of course you don't want to copy them, but you will begin to see the types of designs that people are willing to fork out money for. Remember, that if your designs don't sell, it will be extremely hard to continue doing what you love - so do a little bit of homework first!

2) FINDING A NICHE OR TARGET MARKET

Because of the quantity of t-shirt designs available and business competition these days, it's imperative that you find your own little subculture or niche to market to. By going after a specific target market, you can increase your chances of success dramatically. Some questions to ask yourself:

What does your target look like? What are some of the places that they like to hang out? How old are they?

By knowing the answers to these types of questions, you are limiting your target market down to a specific group of people. You will now have the advantage of being able to think like them. What are the types of designs that would appeal to these people? You can now tailor your designs specifically for you potential customers. It's a great truth that to be successful all you have to do is find out what a certain group of people want, and give it to them!

3) ONLINE MARKETING STRATEGY

This world has not seen a greater opportunity than that which exists today with the marketing power of the Internet. Without a strong Online Marketing plan, you will definitely not be working you t-shirt business to it's fullest potential. The Internet has made the sale of t-shirts extremely easy, so target your customers Online and lead them to your store. There are hundreds of creative ways to draw targeted traffic to your website, many of which are free. Start by looking into such things as:

- Blogging

- Forums

- Social Bookmarking

- eBay

- MySpace - Facebook

- Pay Per Click Advertising

- Search Engine Optimization

- Email Marketing

The list goes on and on!

4) OUTSOURCING

If you don't absolutely love a particular job within your business, then find someone who does! If you love graphic designing, then find someone to print for you! If you're a printer, then find someone who loves to design! Maybe you have no interest in Online Marketing - then leave it to an expert!

Granted, this will cost you a little bit more, but you can't always do everything yourself! Besides if you don't absolutely love what you are doing, you will eventually want to give up. If you hate your day-to-day activities - then you won't last long in this business.

5) CUSTOMER SERVICE

Your customers are the most valuable asset of your business. Treat them well and they might buy from you again, treat them like royalty and not only will they be your customer for life - they'll become a raging fan and do most of your advertising for you, by referring their friends and colleagues! Even if it means losing a little bit of money to keep your customer delighted - it will be well worth it in the long run. I've had instances where a t-shirt order was late, so I organized an employee to jump on a plane and fly the package out to the customer. Yes, it cost more than the profit I made - but I made my customer's day! This one truth has the power to turn your business into a thriving multi-million dollar company. A customer focused company.

How to Start a Tee Shirt Business

By Dee Power

Turning your design talents into a Tee shirt business requires more than artistic flair. You may be a whiz kid at turning out attention-grabbing shirts but that doesn't necessarily mean money in your bank account. You need some business basics and strategies as well. Take some time to prepare and organize your business for success.

Obtain the necessary licenses. A business license is required by nearly every state. Contain your city to see if it requires a license as well. Some cities demand that you have a license to sell within city limits even if your business isn't located there. If you plan on selling T-shirts at craft shows or farmer's markets, check those city requirements as well as where your business is physically located. A sales privilege license is necessary if you sell directly to the end user rather than wholesale. Some arts and crafts shows have a central cashier area. The show's organizers are responsible for collecting and submitting sales tax. Vendors usually require a sales privilege license to buy at wholesale.

Set up the structure of your business. In the beginning, when your sales and expenses are minimal you may want to keep the business as a sole proprietorship. When the business expands, it may make more sense to set it up as a limited liability company or corporation. Ask your accountant which structure is best for your situation.

Research vendors. Your Tee shirt business will require the shirts and materials to decorate the shirts, silk screening products or graphic transfers for hot printing. When selecting a vendor consider not only their prices, but the shipping costs and minimum order levels. Cheaper prices may be offset when you have to order a minimum of 100 shirts at a time.

Determine your market: who will buy your Tee shirts. Alternatives include selling to wholesalers, retailers or directly to customers. Not everyone who buys T-shirts is your customer. Graphic shirts appeal to younger buyers. Grandparents prefer cute shirts as gifts for grandchildren. Select your wholesalers and retailers based on who they market to as well.

Make a list of your competitors. Include the pricing of the Tee shirts, style, where they sell and what marketing strategies they use. List the advantages of your Tee shirts against each competitor. For example, your shirts may be priced higher but are of a better quality. Your shirts are hand painted rather than silk-screened. Emphasize what's different about your T-shirts in your marketing materials.

Implement a marketing strategy. Set up a website that shows off your Tee shirts even if you sell mostly in person. Develop a hard copy brochure with prices and styles to give to potential customers and when you sell a shirt. Schedule a calendar of shows with their entry deadlines clearly marked.

How To Start A T Shirt Business

By Kurt McAninch

How do I start a t shirt business? Well the journey of a million dollar t shirt idea begins with a single idea. Perhaps you have a few ideas rolling around in your head for the next "Have A Nice Day" design. Whatever your motivation for joining the incredibly fun world of t shirt design, welcome!

There is a lot to learn so don't worry about making mistakes.

You've probably been wondering if you should set up a screen printing business in your basement, use heat transfers, or if any of those online Print On Demand (POD) services are worth your time. Well it depends on your end goals. Do you want to market yourself to local schools, clubs, business's, and churches? Would you rather put a few killer designs up that people all over the world can find and purchase? Perhaps a combination of the two?

Let's take a look at screen printing. Screen printing is the method of developing an image on to a screen, most generally a nylon screen nowadays, and then placing ink through the screen on to a t shirt. This is the old school tried and true method that some purists think is the only way to go about making a cool t shirt. Well, it is a great method, but not nearly the only method available. Screen printing can be relatively expensive if you get a 4 color machine with the rotating arms that looks like a partially amputated octopus. You have to also have supplies on hand such as a dryer, ink, screens, and an assortment of different size and color of t shirts. This could set you back around $1500 for up front costs.

How about heat presses? A heat press is a machine that is exactly what its name implies, it is a heater that is pressed on to the shirt and transfers a design to the shirt. The transfer papers are printed, usually by a third party company, and then the ink is heated by the press and transferred in to the fibers of the shirt. This method has come a long way and I believe is the preferred method if you are starting up an at home t shirt business. There is also a new development with transfer paper that allows you to use a standard ink jet printer at home to print your own designs. This can be great to see exactly how your design will look on your shirt. With the price of presses dropping you could get in to this business for as little as $600.

Another method is Direct To Garment (DTG) printing. This is a method of running the actual shirt through a printer which prints the image on to the shirt just as a standard in home ink jet printer would print out a document from your computer. There has been some talk in the design community of the ink drying or clumping up in these machines, but I have seen the work they do and it looks great and feels great on the shirt. This is a higher end option at this time with some printers going for around $25,000. You could get a used on for around $16,000, but it would take a lot of shirts to pay off that large of an investment.

Online printing from companies called Print On Demand (POD) are an increasingly popular option. CafePress, Zazzle, Printfection and many others have started online companies that give you your own storefront to put your designs up for sale. They provide the server space, web site, t shirts and other gifts, shipping, and payment processing. All you have to do is design! The start up cost for CafePress is $60.00 per year for a Premium Shop. If you think you want to branch in to the online world with your designs I would recommend giving CafePress a look. I have used them for the past few years and their service is great and their t shirts look awesome. They are printed with a Direct To Garment printer also, so the feel and quality is top notch.

I know some people who want to dip their toe in to both the online and at home sides of this business, and it's great to be flexible like that. If I were doing that I would go with CafePress for my online option and the heat press method for at home printing. You could capture some local and global business by combining these methods. Later on you might decide to set up your own on line store and focus solely on what you create at home, and that's fine. I would suggest trying out CafePress for your online presence first as it is very low risk compared to purchasing a domain, equipment, designing your website, handling payment and shipping, which can end up consuming time you could spend designing and promoting. There are some great videos and information out there on CafePress to help you get past the learning curve and on your way to getting your designs online. Good Luck!

I am an entrepreneur, teacher, and t shirt designer. I enjoy this business so much that I have combined my passion for teaching and designing to show others how to get their own brand started. I have several articles and videos that can help you begin your journey in the t shirt design business. I am always here to help with special requests or design help so let me know what I can do to assist you. Happy Designing!
